MEDIA ADVISORY - UUP members rally, seek budget funds for SUNY campuses and hospitals

On Friday, January 30 at noon, hundreds of members of United University Professions will rally at the state Capitol. The union members will be joined by NYSUT -- UUP’s statewide affiliate – in calling on state lawmakers to increase state budget funding to keep the doors of SUNY open for qualified students, and to reverse a steep cut in aid to SUNY’s hospitals that would have devastating consequences.

UUP President Phillip H. Smith will lead the rally. NYSUT President Richard Iannuzzi will also address the demonstrators. State legislators from the Capital Region have been invited to speak. Speakers will warn the public about the harmful effects the governor’s budget would have on SUNY, its students and SUNY hospital patients if the proposed budget is not amended.

The rally begins at noon on the east steps of the state Capitol (Eagle Street side).

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 37,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
