UUP pushes legislative agenda at noontime “Info Day”

WHO: United University Professions

WHAT: Legislative Information Day

WHERE: Well of the Legislative Office Building, Albany

WHEN: Tuesday, Feb. 24 at noon

On Tuesday, February 24th at noon, dozens of UUP members from SUNY campuses across New York state will speak with lawmakers from their respective districts to tell them how budget cuts are affecting their individual campuses and to garner support for the union’s legislative agenda. The Well will be arranged into seven geographic regions decorated with posters of UUP members at work during the union’s annual Legislative Information Day.

UUP President Phillip H. Smith will discuss the union’s legislative priorities, including restoration of SUNY budget cuts, increasing funding for SUNY hospitals and passage of a progressive income tax. He’ll be joined at the podium by key legislative leaders (list in formation) including:

- Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith;

- Senate Minority Leader Dean Skelos;

- Assembly Minority Leader Jim Tedisco;

- Sen. Toby Stavisky, chair, Senate Higher Education Committee; and

- Assemblyman Peter Rivera, chair, Assembly Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force

Prior to the event, UUP members will visit the offices of some lawmakers to register their concerns.

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 37,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
