Statement by Phillip H. Smith, President of United University Professions Regarding Sen. Gillibrand’s New Agenda to Expand Higher Education in New York

"As the union representing 35,000 academics and professionals at the State University of New York, UUP applauds Sen. Gillibrand for recognizing that higher education is critical to New York’s economic growth—even in these difficult economic times.

“The senator shares our concern about the affordability of higher education, especially for lower-income families. This issue is a greater concern now, given the struggles many New Yorkers are having just to make ends meet.

“We also support Sen. Gillibrand’s efforts to encourage more students to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering and math to meet the needs of employers.

“To those who might question the funding of such initiatives, we say New York cannot afford to ignore the needs of future generations who are key to our state’s economic well being. This kind of investment is well worth it.”

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 42,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
