Statement by UUP President Phillip H. Smith regarding
NYSTI Board’s decision to suspend operations

“I am deeply concerned and disappointed over yesterday’s decision by the New York State Theatre Institute’s Board of Directors to suspend NYSTI’s operations on December 31, unless it finds private funding. This decision puts on notice the 14 members of our union and one management employee that they will be out of jobs in two months, unless they can raise enough money to stay in business between January 1 and the start of the next fiscal year, April 1, 2011.

I do appreciate the Board’s other action during yesterday’s meeting to reopen the state’s Early Retirement Incentive (Part A) to the eight NYSTI employees we believe would be eligible.”

“UUP will continue to support NYSTI’s fund-raising operations. We remain hopeful that adequate private contributions will keep this valuable resource available to the public.”

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 42,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
