UUP offers new scholarship for SUNY students

United University Professions (UUP), the nation’s largest higher education union, announces a new scholarship program for SUNY graduate students in addition to its annual scholarships for undergraduates.

The William Scheuerman Post Baccalaureate Scholarship is open to full-time graduate or professional SUNY students who exhibit dedication to the goals and ideals of the labor union movement. To qualify, students must be carrying a course load of at least nine credits, must have completed at least nine credits, and hold a cumulative grade-point average of 4.0. The $2,000 annual scholarship is named in honor of former UUP President William Scheuerman.

The UUP College Scholarship Fund continues the awarding of up to four scholarships to outstanding full-time undergraduate students enrolled at a SUNY state-operated campus. Applicants for the one-time only $2,000 scholarship must have a minimum grade point average of 3.75.

For both the undergraduate and graduate scholarships, students must also demonstrate personal as well as academic achievement along with a strong record of community service and a dedication to labor unions. Both scholarships are awarded on a one-time basis, but there is no limit on how many times a student may apply. The application deadline is March 1, 2011.

Both scholarship applications can be obtained and completed online by visiting UUP’s website at www.uupinfo.org/scholarships/scholarship.php. Applications are also available at UUP chapter offices located at each of SUNY’s 29 state-operated campuses, or at campus financial aid offices. Applications may also be obtained by calling UUP’s administrative office in Albany toll-free at (800) 342-4206.

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 42,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
