UUP members slate rally, urge state investment in SUNY

On Friday, February 4 at noon, hundreds of members of the union that represents SUNY academic and professional faculty will rally at the state Capitol.

United University Professions members will be joined by members of NYSUT –– UUP’s statewide affiliate –– in calling on state lawmakers to invest in the state’s future by investing in SUNY. They will also urge the Legislature to reject any proposed cuts to SUNY’s operating budget, which has been slashed by nearly 30 percent in the past two and a half years.

UUP President Phillip H. Smith will lead the rally. NYSUT Executive Vice President Andrew Pallotta and Secretary-Treasurer Lee Cutler will also address the demonstrators. Several state legislators from the Capital Region have accepted an invitation to speak.

The rally begins at noon on the west steps of the state Capitol (Swan Street side).

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 37,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
