UUP members will protest layoffs at Downstate Medical at 3:30 today

Today (July 16) between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m., hundreds of members of United University Professions, the union that represents workers at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, will demonstrate outside the 395 Lenox Road entrance to the hospital in Brooklyn against a plan that would lead to hundreds of layoffs.

UUP members will conduct informational picketing to coincide with the timing of a meeting at Downstate that will be attended by SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher, SUNY Board of Trustees Chairman H. Carl McCall, Downstate Hospital representatives and state lawmakers from Brooklyn to discuss the fate of Downstate.

UUP Downstate Chapter President and statewide Treasurer Rowena Blackman-Stroud will lead the protest.

The demonstration begins at 3:30 at the 395 Lenox Road entrance to Downstate.

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 37,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
