UUP awards scholarships to three SUNY students

ALBANY – United University Professions (UUP), the union that represents academic and professional faculty on state-operated State University of New York campuses, has awarded its annual scholarships to three SUNY students. Funding for the $3,000 scholarships comes from donations from active and retired members.

The union awarded UUP College Scholarships to one full-time undergraduate student and two outstanding graduate students enrolled at SUNY state-operated campuses.

The recipients of the 2014 UUP scholarships are:

  • Kaitlyn Gardner of Buffalo, N.Y., a graduate student in childhood and early childhood education at Buffalo State; she has a grade point average of 4.0;
  • Maura Hanley of East Aurora, N.Y., a senior at Buffalo State majoring in social work; she has a grade point average of 4.0; and
  • Caitlin Janiszewski of Schenectady, N.Y., a Ph.D. candidate in Latin American, Caribbean and U.S. Latino studies at the University at Albany; she has a grade point average of 3.95.

“These extraordinary SUNY students make us tremendously proud of the work we do,” UUP President Frederick E. Kowal said. “They are focused, energetic, and committed to their studies and their communities. It is our pleasure to recognize their accomplishments with these scholarships.”

Undergraduate applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 3.75. Graduate student applicants must have a grade point average of at least 3.95. Students must also demonstrate personal and academic achievement, as well as a strong record of community service and a dedication to labor unions.

UUP has awarded 85 college scholarships since the program began in 1988.

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 37,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
