Kowal re-elected as UUP president

Representatives to United University Professions’ 2015 Spring Delegate Assembly unanimously re-elected Fred Kowal to a second two-year term as UUP president. Kowal, of Warnerville, N.Y., is on leave from SUNY Cobleskill as a professor of political science and Native American studies.

Nearly 300 delegates also elected two other statewide officers to two-year terms at the spring gathering of the union’s policymaking and legislative body, April 17 and 18 in Saratoga Springs.

Eileen Landy of Clifton Park, who is on leave from SUNY College of Old Westbury as an associate professor of sociology, was re-elected to an eighth term as UUP’s statewide secretary. Arthur Shertzer of East Setauket, a senior staff associate at SUNY Stony Brook and president of UUP’s Stony Brook Chapter, was elected to his first full term as UUP’s membership development officer. Shertzer has served in the position since January, when he was elected to fill a vacancy.

The following six members were re-elected to two-year terms on UUP’s Executive Board:

  • Thomas Hoey of Albany, a senior programmer/analyst at UAlbany;
  • Darleyne Mayers of Freeport, an Educational Opportunity Center staff associate at SUNY Farmingdale;
  • Lori Nash of Oswego, an adjunct instructor in philosophy at SUNY Oswego and president of UUP’s Oswego Chapter;
  • Laura Rhoads of Potsdam, a professor of cell physiology at SUNY Potsdam and president of UUP’s Potsdam Chapter;
  • Anne Wiegard of Groton, an English lecturer at SUNY Cortland; and
  • Beth Wilsonof Rosendale, a lecturer in art history at SUNY New Paltz and president-elect of UUP’s New Paltz Chapter.

Newly elected to two-year terms on UUP’s Executive Board were:

  • Ken Lindblom of Shoreham, an associate professor and director of English teacher education at SUNY Stony Brook; and
  • Pamela Malone of Wilton, a senior staff associate at Empire State College in Saratoga Springs and president of UUP’s Empire State College Chapter.
