Statement from UUP President Frederick E. Kowal on Supreme Court's consideration of Friedrichs case

"I am disappointed by the Supreme Court’s decision to take up the Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association case, a suit bankrolled and propelled by wealthy anti-union forces designed to weaken and eventually break public sector unions—thereby killing the last real defender of the working class in the U.S.

By taking up this case, the Supreme Court is facilitating a vicious assault on working families, one which serves to push the American Dream further and further out of reach for millions of laborers nationwide.

Unions provide the opportunity for success and prosperity for those who work hard and play fair. Organized labor makes America strong. Unions give workers a strong, necessary voice. But Friedrichs is an outright attack on working families, the American economy and the American way.

In the wake of recent major Supreme Court decisions that upheld same-sex marriage and the Affordable Care Act, I am confident that the justices will see this case for the sham that it is and turn back this most recent assault on our basic rights to organize and advocate for ourselves and our sisters and brothers in the working class."

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 37,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
