UUP awards scholarships to four SUNY students

ALBANY – United University Professions (UUP), the union that represents academic and professional faculty on state-operated State University of New York campuses, has awarded its annual scholarships to four SUNY students. Funding for the $3,000 scholarships comes from donations from active and retired members.

The union awarded UUP College Scholarships to two full-time undergraduate students and two outstanding graduate students enrolled at SUNY state-operated campuses.

The recipients of the 2015 UUP scholarships are:

  • Dylan Christopherson of Morrisonville, N.Y., a sophomore at SUNY Plattsburgh majoring in accounting with a grade point average of 4.0;
  • Amanda Dunn of Webster N.Y., a graduate student at SUNY Brockport majoring in school counseling with a grade point average of 4.0;
  • Adam Graczyk of Buffalo, N.Y., a graduate student earning a Ph.D. in community health and health behavior at the University at Buffalo with a grade point average of 4.0; and
  • Kiana Morse of Port Jervis, N.Y., a senior at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse majoring environmental resources engineering with a grade point average of 3.85.

“We are proud to honor, teach and reward these extraordinary SUNY students,” UUP President Frederick E. Kowal, Ph.D., said. “They are focused, energetic, and committed to their studies and their communities. They serve as an example of the work we do at SUNY campuses across the state. It is our pleasure to recognize their accomplishments with these scholarships.”

Undergraduate applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 3.75. Graduate student applicants must have a grade point average of at least 3.95. Students must also demonstrate personal and academic achievement, as well as a strong record of community service and a dedication to labor unions.

UUP has awarded 89 college scholarships since the program began in 1988.

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 37,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse.
