Statement from UUP President Frederick E. Kowal on governor’s veto of Maintenance of Effort bill

"I am disappointed that the governor chose to veto Maintenance of Effort bill, which would have increased state support for SUNY to cover inflationary and mandatory expenses like heating and electric bills and building costs—expenses that students are paying for through higher tuition.

Thanks to the strong support of the state Legislature, which approved this bill in June by near-unanimous votes, we are certain that the governor is now fully aware of this untenable situation.

We remain hopeful that he will take steps in the near future to work to find an innovative solution to provide the necessary funding to resolve this situation, once and for all. UUP will continue to push for passage of this important initiative."

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 37,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
