Statement from UUP President Frederick E. Kowal on the Empire Center report on state payrolls
“We applaud the governor’s call to rein in administrative salaries at SUNY. Those resources belong in the classroom, benefitting students who want—and deserve—the best education possible.
"What is not mentioned is that about 30 percent of SUNY's faculty is made up of adjuncts who work for poverty-level pay. The emphasis should instead be focused on resolving this long-standing problem by raising their pay.
"Many of those listed in the top 50 are top-notch physicians and/or researchers who are leaders in their respective fields of study and who bring revenue into SUNY."
UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 42,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
