Statement from UUP President Frederick E. Kowal on SCOTUS decision in Friedrichs case

“The Supreme Court’s decision in the Friedrichs case is a victory for working people across the nation. The 4-4 vote upholds a lower court decision affirming the authority of public sector unions to collect dues from all members of a bargaining unit, including fee payers.

“The ruling is a defeat for anti-union, conservative forces whose goal is to bankrupt unions and dilute their political influence. But organized labor cannot rest, knowing full well that the same anti-union factions that brought Friedrichs before the high court have other cases in the pipeline to challenge unions.

"Union members need to be active in this year’s elections to ensure that we have friends in the White House, Congress, and in the judiciary who will work to defend the hard-earned rights of the working class in America.”

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 37,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
