Statement from UUP President Frederick E. Kowal supporting striking workers at Verizon

“UUP stands united with the nearly 40,000 Verizon workers who are on strike. We support our sisters and brothers in their fight for good jobs and fair pay.

“The Communications Workers of America and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers have been negotiating in good faith to reach agreement on a new contract. But Verizon has shown no such inclination. The company needs to do the right thing and negotiate fairly with the workers who have made Verizon the success that it is.

“As the son of a 50-year member of the IBEW, I can empathize with these workers, who are fighting for their families and their futures.

"Verizon seems to be more interested in making additional billions in profits by moving jobs overseas and outsourcing work to low-wage contractors. The company also continues to refuse to negotiate a fair contract with retail workers at Verizon Wireless, which unionized in 2014.

“Our members are ready and able to support our sisters and brothers at Verizon in whatever way possible.”

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 42,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
