Statement from UUP President Frederick E. Kowal on SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher's decision to resign

“UUP congratulates Chancellor Nancy Zimpher for her years of service. I wish her well in her next endeavor.

“The chancellor brought a level of visibility and stability to the University during her tenure as SUNY's leader. She led SUNY through the Great Recession and took solid steps toward reversing a chronic underfunding of the University.

"Over the years, the chancellor and I have had our differences on a number of issues, including SUNY’s public hospitals, Open SUNY, transparency at SUNY’s research and campus foundations, and most recently, her TeachNY report.

“I’m hopeful that in the coming months we can forge a true, working relationship to constructively address the issues facing SUNY.”

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 37,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
