Statement from UUP President Frederick E. Kowal on Betsy DeVos’ confirmation as education secretary

"UUP stands with millions nationwide who opposed Betsy DeVos' confirmation as U.S. education secretary. The furor over her nomination underscores the strong opposition many Americans have with Donald Trump’s direction for this great country.

"This divisive 51-50 vote only serves to energize organized labor to continue the fight against Labor secretary nominee Andrew Puzder, secretary of health and human services nominee Tom Price, and attorney general nominee Jeff Sessions.

"DeVos has never held a job in education; she hasn’t the slightest understanding of basic educational policy, and has zero experience and zero qualifications to serve as education secretary. She does not believe in public education. Her policies will certainly be disastrous for our nation's students."

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 37,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
