Statement from UUP President Frederick E. Kowal on Andrew Puzder's withdrawal as labor secretary
"Andrew Puzder's decision to withdraw his nomination as secretary of labor is an important victory for working families across the country.
"Mr. Puzder was an inappropriate, uniquely unqualified candidate for secretary of labor. Progressives and unionists nationwide were determined to stop his confirmation and urged senators to vote against him.
"As the president of the nation's largest higher education union, I would like to thank Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand for leading the fight to oppose Mr. Puzder's confirmation.
"Donald Trump couldn't have chosen a worse candidate for this vital post. This is yet another example of the ineptitude of Mr. Trump and his lie-ridden, bumbling administration."
UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 42,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
