Statement from UUP President Frederick E. Kowal on President Donald Trump’s revised travel ban

"President Donald Trump’s second attempt at a travel ban continues to unfairly target Muslims. Trump’s discriminatory order blocks people from six predominately Muslim countries from entering the U.S.

"America has always been a melting pot of cultures, a country that has opened its arms to the tired, the poor, and the huddled masses of the world. His executive order is an utter betrayal of all we hold dear as Americans.

"The ban will also have a chilling effect on research, health care and higher education. It will discourage—if not outright block—some international scholars from traveling to the U.S., and it could keep many American scholars—particularly those who are Muslim—from traveling overseas to teach and to learn.

"So many Americans have family members who came to this country as immigrants or refugees. We must speak out and tell Trump that his ban is an affront to those who came to America and broke their backs to make it the greatest nation on Earth."

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 37,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
