Statement from UUP President Frederick E. Kowal on American Health Care Act vote

"We are appalled by the votes of seven New York House Republicans to approve the American Health Care Act.

"By voting yes, Representatives Elise Stefanik, John Faso, Claudia Tenney, Peter King, Chris Collins, Tom Reed and Lee Zeldin have turned their backs on New Yorkers by severing their access to decent, affordable health care coverage.

“The rushed, politically-motivated bill threatens the financial viability of SUNY's three teaching hospitals, which could lose millions of dollars in badly needed revenue. These public hospitals treat hundreds of thousands of patients each year, whether or not they can afford to pay for care.

"We will not forget.

"UUP strongly urges Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to wage an aggressive fight to block passage of this dangerous legislation in the Senate.

"Thank you to Reps. Daniel Donovan and John Katko for voting down this ill-planned bill and standing up for affordable health care for all."

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 37,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
