Statement from UUP President Frederick E. Kowal on President Donald Trump’s proposed budget

"President Trump’s proposed budget for 2018 devotes billions to build a wall on the Mexican border while making deep cuts to education, Medicaid, and programs for the poor. This is a wildly unbalanced spending plan that targets medical research and health insurance for children of low-income working families while boosting military spending by 10 percent.

"Trump is attempting to slash federal spending with draconian cuts that, ironically, will negatively impact many of the same voters who put him in office. Radical spending reductions to programs like the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Cancer Institute, and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases are untenable and must be scrapped.

“Millions of New Yorkers would feel the backlash of this budget, which is a travesty. Trump’s proposed budget is $4.1 trillion; stifling cuts to Medicaid, education, medical research, disease control, food stamps, and other programs and agencies account for $3.6 trillion in reductions.

"UUP is calling on New York’s senators and House members to stand up for New York’s children, students and working families and reject this defective, deficient spending plan that does little more than to pander to Trump’s conservative base. We will be watching. And we will remember in November 2018."

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 42,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
