Statement from UUP President Frederick E. Kowal on President Donald Trump’s decision to abandon the Paris Agreement

"President Donald Trump’s decision to retreat from the Paris Agreement is a historic mistake that future generations will look back on with disdain. It is easily one of the most ill-conceived moves he’s made since becoming president.

"Once again, Trump has turned his back on scientific facts about global warming, choosing instead to line the pockets of his billionaire cronies by tearing away necessary defenses to keep our planet sustainable and our environment secure. He’s favoring polluters over the health and well-being of the American people. By abandoning the Paris accord, the Trump administration has weakened America in the eyes of the world.

"As the nation’s largest public higher education union, UUP is committed to fact-based decision making, and a decision like this is anything but that. President Kennedy took us to the moon. With this move, Donald Trump will take us back to the Dark Ages.

“All but two countries—Syria and Nicaragua—have signed on to the agreement, clear proof that the world recognizes that climate change is real and cares about the catastrophic impact that global emissions of greenhouse gases can have if left unchecked. Trump’s decision also undermines the move toward renewable energy and will serve to stunt green energy growth—and choke the new jobs that would come with it.

"Instead, global competition from frequent Trump targets, such as China and Germany, will surge ahead with green energy technological advances.

"Climate change is real. All of Trump’s denials and hoax claims cannot change that. His decision is a disaster for our nation and our world. The tragedy is that its full effect will be felt by our children and our children’s children."

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 42,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
