Statement from UUP President Frederick E. Kowal on the Dakota Access Pipeline

"UUP applauds the ruling by a Washington federal judge that the Trump administration overlooked environmental procedures when it approved the Dakota Access Pipeline.

"We stand proudly and strongly with the Standing Rock Sioux tribe in calling for a complete shutdown of the pipeline.

"While the ruling doesn’t halt operation of the pipeline, which went into use earlier this month, it opens up the possibility—and that’s a huge victory for the Standing Rock Sioux and environmentalists, who believe the pipeline will contaminate the Standing Rock tribe's drinking water and desecrate their sacred lands.

"This latest gaff is further evidence of the deleterious effect the Trump administration has had on policy. Seeking political gain, President Donald Trump tossed aside data outlining potential environmental impacts of this pipeline and steamed ahead with little regard."

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 37,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
