Statement from UUP President Frederick E. Kowal on the importance of Labor Day

"Workplace safety, the 40-hour week, paid vacations, weekends, health coverage and the ability to negotiate salary and benefits—all brought to you by the labor movement.

"Yet, for far too many working families, labor’s decades-long fight to achieve these and many other gains has been all but forgotten or lost. Anti-union forces recognize this, and these sowers of fear and intimidation have increased their direct assault on organized labor—and ultimately, the middle class.

"Labor Day isn’t about parades or picnics, or a day off from work. Labor Day is action. It’s who we are and what we do. We are teachers and healers, growers and builders, athletes, policemen, plumbers and pipefitters. We are workers, proud and united.

"More than ever, unions matter."

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 37,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
