Statement from UUP President Frederick E. Kowal on President Trump's decision to rescind DACA

"The president’s decision to terminate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, otherwise known as DACA, is of grave concern to UUP and to the tens of thousands of “Dreamers” who are students at SUNY campuses and other campuses around the country. UUP fully and wholly opposes this decision.

"These children and students are called Dreamers because they are inspiring individuals with a passion to live and work in America—the country where they grew up and the country they know and love.

"As children of undocumented immigrants, the vast majority of Dreamers had no say in coming to America. Yet, America is their home. These young people are part of the fabric of our communities. They attend public schools and colleges and put their lives on the line in the military. They contribute to this country, as taxpayers, workers, and consumers.

"America is a country of immigrants, of dreamers. The temporary protections that DACA provides allowed the Dreamers to come out of the shadows and pursue their futures without the crushing fear of deportation. To yank these protections out from under them won’t benefit the country. What it will do is plunge the lives and futures of nearly one million young people into chaos.

"We need leadership from the president and Congress, not political posturing. It is time to build bridges to citizenship for the Dreamers and their families. UUP will stand against any and all attempts to deport undocumented students and all who seek refuge in this great country."

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 42,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
