Statement from UUP President Frederick E. Kowal on President Trump’s dismantling of the ACA

"By using his executive power to abruptly end crucial federal cost-sharing subsidies that help millions of poor and rural Americans pay for health care; and by circumventing the Affordable Care Act by making it easier for small companies and young, healthy Americans to buy different health insurance plans at lower prices, President Donald Trump has, in effect, singlehandedly set in motion the toppling of the ACA.

"These politically motivated decisions—which experts predict will cause the ACA to implode—furthers the president’s plan to divide the country—by race, wealth, and now by health. It also pushes forward an agenda supported by a minority of Americans that serves to undo President Obama’s legacy of inclusiveness.

"Health care isn’t a privilege, it’s a right. Obamacare isn’t perfect, but it provides a necessary level of health care that poor and sick Americans need. Making health care coverage more expensive for the poor and sick is inhumane in a modern, civilized society.

"These executive orders are despicable for so many reasons, including their timing, which come as wildfires rage and Americans die in California, the country mourns the mass shooting in Las Vegas, and Puerto Rico, the south, and Texas reel in the aftermaths of hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. The nation is desperate for healing, not harm."
