Statement from UUP President Frederick E. Kowal on the House tax plan

"Once again, members of the Republican-led House have turned their backs on working families by passing a tax reform plan that favors the rich, large corporations and their wealthy donors. The rich get richer, and America’s working families are the big losers.

"This economic folly is a financial disaster for New York State and the nation. Under this draconian measure, students will no longer be able to deduct interest from student loans, and they will be taxed on tuition waivers. People with long-term illnesses won’t be allowed to deduct medical expenses. As if that’s not enough, cuts to education, Medicaid and Medicare will be used to help fund this early Christmas gift to the rich.

"Representatives Claudia Tenney, John Katko, Chris Collins and Tom Reed showed their true colors by voting yes for this heinous tax plan that provides whopping tax cuts to the wealthiest New Yorkers and ends tax write-offs for state, local income and sales tax income for millions of working families.

"UUP wishes to thank representatives Peter King, Lee Zeldin, Elise Stefanik and John Faso and New York’s Democratic delegation for casting votes against this plan.

"I hope the Senate will reject this fiasco of a bill and instead offer a plan that helps hardworking New Yorkers instead of irreparably harming them."

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 37,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
