UUP president honored with Kate Mullany Medal

UUP President Frederick E. Kowal is the recipient of the American Labor Studies Center’s Kate Mullany Medal, given annually to New York leaders in labor, politics and their communities.

Kowal, who received the award for his contributions to labor, was recognized at a Dec. 11 ceremony at the NYSUT offices in Latham, NY.

"I am very proud of this honor, named for the woman who co-founded the Collar Laundry Union, the first women’s union in the United States,” said Kowal. “We must always remember labor’s roots, and the unflagging spirit and dogged determination of those who fought and struggled before us.

"Labor is under attack, and like those before us, we can never give up,” he said. “We will never quit fighting for the working families of this nation."

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Alisa Cahill Henderson, president of Duncan & Cahill, the Troy-based construction company that restored the Kate Mullany House, were also honored by the center, a nonprofit Latham-based organization that collects, evaluates and disseminates labor history and labor studies curricula to schools nationwide.

Fred Pazmino, president of Titan Roofing Inc., which installed a new roof on the structure; and Michael Rossi, business manager for Roofers, Waterproofers Local 241 and Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 83, also received awards. Both unions worked with Titan Roofing on the restoration.

The Kate Mullany House, at 350 8th St. in Troy, N.Y., is Mullany’s family home. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1998, and a National Historic Site in 2004. The American Labor Studies Center will be located at the Mullany House; the center is funded by contributions and government grants.

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 42,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
