Statement from UUP President Frederick E. Kowal on racism at SUNY Plattsburgh

"UUP supports and stands proudly with SUNY Plattsburgh students in their strong condemnation of and disgust over a racist social media post.

"That racism continues to rear its ugly head in Plattsburgh and across the country is reprehensible and will not be tolerated. UUP will fight shoulder-to-shoulder with SUNY Plattsburgh students, our UUP Plattsburgh Chapter members, and any organization that opposes racism and supports civil rights.

"We thank SUNY Vice Chancellor Carlos Medina, and Teresa Miller, chief of staff and senior vice chancellor for strategic initiatives, for meeting with and listening to the concerns of SUNY Plattsburgh students impacted by this heinous act.

"All forms of racism and hate must be met with resistance. We applaud SUNY Plattsburgh students for quickly confronting and speaking against this overt display of racism."

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 37,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
