Statement from United University Professions President Frederick E. Kowal on the NYS Climate and Community Protection Act

“Congratulations to New York Renews for its strong, dedicated commitment to get state leaders to approve a deal to pass the New York State Climate and Community Protection Act. This is a huge victory, and it will place New York state at the forefront of the fight against climate change.

“As a NY Renews coalition member and leader of a union that represents thousands of SUNY scientists and researchers, I’d like to thank the governor, Senate Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins, and Assembly Speaker Heastie for reaching agreement on this important piece of legislation.

“We strongly support this bill, which would see the state drastically reduce its fossil fuel emissions by 2050, create climate justice by investing resources in communities impacted by climate change, and support workers as they transition to green energy jobs.

“UUP has long been a supporter of climate justice and legislation to protect and preserve our environment. Our union was the catalyst behind the governor’s decision in 2018 to budget $15 million for clean energy workforce development and training programs at SUNY.

“We look forward to working with the governor, the Legislature and SUNY Chancellor Johnson in promoting the CCPA and integrating it into green energy programs at SUNY.”

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 37,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
