More than 80 UUPers joined 2,500 of their NYSUT brothers and sisters in Buffalo to take part in the yearly Representative Assembly.
The theme for the 37th annual gathering wasS “Speak Up, Speak Out.” Union leaders from more than 1,200 NYSUT locals attended the conference, which featured speeches by NYSUT President Richard Iannuzzi and other statewide officers, AFT President Randi Weingarten, state Education Commissioner Richard P. Mills, and various elected officials.
Delegates also elected representatives to the National Education Association at the RA. They also sought approval for three resolutions. The resolutions call for repealing the Defense of Marriage Act, preserving higher education, and supporting the United Automobile Workers.
On opening night, UUP member Thomas Matthews was honored as NYSUT’s Higher Education Member of the Year. Matthews, of SUNY Geneseo, served as VP for professionals, statewide treasurer, and chief negotiator for two collective bargaining agreements. He received the award for his longstanding commitment to the union and higher education.
