Members learn, teach at new leaders orientation

New UUP leaders Karen Teitelbaum of Delhi, left, and Susan Collier of Brockport participate in a novel exercise called “SWOT,” for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, at UUP’s New Chapter Leaders Orientation. The SWOT workshop was led by Purchase Chapter President John Delate.

Nearly all 10 of UUP’s newly-elected chapter presidents – one of the largest classes of new chapter presidents in the union’s history – were among more than 40 members who attended the new leaders’ program June 26-27 in Lake George. The two-day training program is designed to provide the union’s new chapter leaders the skills they need to serve the members on their campuses.

The SWOT exercise asked participants to identify specific strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats facing the union to help them develop strategic plans and goals for their chapters. Part of the group discussion zeroed in on the values of unions, which the new members were told form the bedrock of what UUP is and what their chapters need.

The group also got hands-on guidance on conducting effective meetings, and information on ways to promote membership participation.
