UUP president meets with SUNY chancellor

UUP President Phil Smith met with new SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher on September 22nd and gave her a copy of The Voice, UUP's official membership publication. Smith described this first one-on-one meeting as "a very good start to what promises to be a positive and productive relationship."

"We're pretty much on the same page," Smith said, adding they've taken the first step in forging a partnership between UUP and SUNY. "She has an appreciation of collective bargaining and is very rapidly learning how New York state works."

Smith said he and the chancellor pledged to move forward forcefully and together on the many areas where they agree, and to work assiduously to reach agreement in those areas where they have differences.

Smith said he applauds the chancellor's strong stance on the need to protect the University's programs and personnel and her recognition that the state needs to take greater responsibility for its public universities.

Smith and Zimpher agreed to meet again as needed.
