UUP delegates meet, act on resolutions at Fall ’09 DA

UUP President Phil Smith updates chapter leaders on the most pressing issues confronting the union. Smith met with the leaders Friday, Oct. 1 at the start of the union’s two-day fall convention in Rochester.

Nearly 300 UUP delegates participated in a slew of business sessions at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center, including a meeting of the Chapter Presidents and Vice Presidents. The DA is UUP’s policymaking and legislative meeting, held in the fall, winter and spring of each year.

During this DA, members discussed and acted on 20 resolutions, including one calling on UUP to strongly advocate for national health care reform.

The theme for the Fall DA was “Applauding Excellence.” Stony Brook delegate and former Executive Board member Michael Zweig received the Nina Mitchell Distinguished Service Award – the union’s highest honor – for his longtime service to UUP and the labor movement.

UUP’s four College Scholarship award winners were also at the DA to accept their awards. And more than 100 UUP members were honored with UUP Service Awards for union service ranging from five to 35 years.
