UUPers, students rally at UAlbany vs. SUNY budget cuts

UUPers from the UAlbany chapter lead students in chanting, “1, 2, 3, 4, SUNY is what we’re fighting for” during a Nov. 6 campus rally organized by the Student Association to protest the governor’s $90 million midyear cut to SUNY.

More than 40 UUP members, carrying signs and making noise with clackers as well as their collective voices, rallied in support of the students.

“We stand in support of you, our students. The state can’t continue to balance the budget on the backs of its students,” UAlbany Chapter President Candy Merbler told the crowd.

Several student leaders also addressed the rally, expressing appreciation for the union’s backing.

“We all need to come together to say we can no longer afford these cuts,” said Samantha Bernstein, Legislative Affairs Director for the Student Association. “We are the future of New York state. They (the faculty) are the ones who make us who we are.”
