UUPers press district advocacy efforts

UUP members from Upstate Medical University meet with Assemblywoman Joan Christensen, second from left, in her Syracuse district office on Dec. 10. Shown from left are UMU Chapter President Carol Braund, Dave Peckham, Bob Fluck, and Violeta Cuenca.

The UUPers drove home the point that SUNY is suffering under the weight of $410 million in state budget cuts over the past two years. They also urged her to reject efforts to give SUNY more autonomy. According to UUP Executive Board member Brian Tappen of Upstate, Christensen agreed with UUP that proposals to allow SUNY campuses the power to set their own tuition rates and sell or lease campus property should not be approved. She said that the current oversight powers of the Legislature in such matters should be preserved.

UMU has been among the most active of chapters conducting district advocacy visits.
