UUPers join Potsdam student rally

100107

Proudly sporting her UUP T-shirt, UUP Potsdam Chapter President Laura Rhoads waits her turn to speak at a Potsdam campus rally called to protest state budget cuts to SUNY. Standing next to Rhoads is Canton Chapter President Dave Butler. Assemblywoman Addie Russell, standing in front of Butler, agreed with the need to restore funds to the University.

“All of us are very concerned about these devastating cuts,” Rhoads said at the rally. “We need you to ask your parents, grandparents and friends to contact their lawmakers through UUP’s Web site to express their concern.”

UUP’s participation in the rally, organized by the student government, is one example of how the union is aligning itself with other organizations to build coalitions to preserve and expand state support for SUNY. The coalition-building activity has included student rallies on other campuses, and reaching out to local businesses for support, especially those who stand to lose the most from budget cuts to the University.
