Unions, students unite for Higher Education Action Day

UUP members joined students from SUNY and CUNY in listening to speakers during Higher Education Action Day in Albany. About 100 UUP members participated with more than 300 students for the March 9 rally and advocacy event to urge the Legislature to reject proposed budget cuts for public higher education.

UUP President Phil Smith delivered a strong message to the hundreds huddled for the indoor rally.

“There are three things you’ve got to remember. Tell legislators to stop the budget cuts, restore the funding, and stop looking at students as cash machines,” he said to overwhelming applause.

SUNY faces a $152 million reduction in the proposed state budget which would bring to $562 million the total cut from SUNY in the past two years.

Students and faculty from both SUNY and CUNY visited more than 130 state lawmakers urging them to not only vote against the budget cuts, but also against the proposed Public Higher Education Empowerment and Innovation Act.
