UUP delegates elect officers, board members at Spring DA

Roosevelt Wardlaw of Buffalo Center casts his ballot as his fellow UUP delegates line up to vote in elections conducted during the union’s 2010 Spring Delegate Assembly in Albany. Three UUP officers won re-election: VP for Academics Fred Floss, VP for Professionals John Marino, and Treasurer Rowena Blackman-Stroud.

Delegates also elected five members to UUP’s statewide Executive Board, re-electing Philippe Abraham of Albany, Jamie Dangler of Cortland and Carolyn Kube of Stony Brook HSC. Jim Engle of Morrisville and Ray Gleason of Alfred won election to their first terms on the Executive Board.

In his report to the nearly 300 delegates, UUP President Phil Smith garnered applause for the union’s success at winning a temporary restraining order blocking state worker furloughs from taking effect. He also renewed his call for members to fight the proposed Empowerment Act as well as other assaults against public higher education, and he appealed to delegates to activate their chapter members.

“A crisis is a terrible thing to waste,” Smith said. “Use it to get more people engaged. I encourage you to talk to your legislators.”

Delegates also approved the union’s 2010-2011 budget, attended committee meetings, wrote and faxed state lawmakers urging them to support SUNY, approved a series of resolutions, and honored members with awards for their chapter newsletters and websites.
