Conference for professionals draws dozens to Long Island

Solomon Ayo of Farmingdale raises a question during a UUP-sponsored conference for Long Island professionals, held June 5 at the Huntington Hilton. Ayo was among more than 70 UUPers to take part in the daylong conference moderated by statewide VP for Professionals John Marino, inset.

“These workshops are designed to give professionals some of the tools and information they need to build a productive and rewarding career at SUNY,” said Marino.

Presentations by Marino and UUP/NYSUT Labor Relations Specialist Bill Capowski included types of compensation for work beyond a member’s professional obligation, and a review of the appeals committees for promotions, salary increases, evaluations and permanent appointment. Marino also moderated an hour-long forum on relevant issues and concerns raised by participants.

“I believe we achieved our goal to have members feel a greater connection to their union and to recognize that there are many provisions in our contract that they can—and should—take advantage of,” Marino added.
