UUPers clean up, give back

UUP members Dawn Leadley, left, Rich Veenstra, and Carol Braund pick up trash alongside Interstate 481 in Syracuse. They are among several Upstate Medical University chapter members who volunteered to clean up the roadway, as a way to give back to their communities. And they are not alone.

In September, The Voice will start a new feature called “Our Give Backs,” to focus on UUPers who take time from their active lives to serve their communities.

The stories will spotlight UUPers such as Buffalo Center member Susan Udin, who recently helped install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in senior citizens’ homes through her volunteer work with a nonprofit group that aids the elderly.

Some other examples:
• Canton UUPer Sabel Bong works with an after school program in Schenectady offering mentoring and academic help to students.
• ESF member Heather Rice volunteers at an Oswego counseling center to talk with teen-agers who may not otherwise be able to afford the service.
• Oneonta UUPer Karen Joest led a group of students to Peru in June, where they dug a mile-long trench to bring water to an orphanage.

From providing aid in earthquake-ravaged Haiti to volunteering at their local churches, UUPers do more than give their all on the job.

They give back.

If you’ve got an “Our Give Backs” story you’d like to share, we’d love to hear it.Please contact Mike Lisi, UUP’s communications specialist, at 518-640-6609, or by e-mail at
