Outreach committee works on strategies

UUP activists, including Tom Hogle of Morrisville, center, shared strategies they've used on their campuses to advance the union's legislative goals. More than two dozen UUPers participated in the session which took place during the union's Outreach Committee retreat in mid-August.

They also heard from UUP President Phil Smith, who led a joint meeting of the Outreach Committee and Chapter Presidents and Vice Presidents on Aug. 12.

Smith urged the participants to continue building coalitions with other groups.

"We have to reach out to labor and community groups and the faculty senates to educate them about the harm that's been done to SUNY," Smith said, referring to the most recent state budget cuts. The union chief also reminded the leaders that PHEEIA remains a threat, despite its failure to gain legislative approval when lawmakers finalized the state budget.

"I hope this dragon never comes out of its cave, but we have to be vigilant," Smith warned.

Outreach Committee members also received an activist toolkit to help guide their advocacy efforts.
