Ad Hoc Advisory Committee shares members’ feedback on contract concerns

101210

Organized. Thorough. Focused. Determined.

These adjectives best describe the tenor of a Dec. 9 meeting that brought together members of the union's Ad Hoc Advisory Committee, Negotiations Committee and Negotiations Team. Ad hoc committee appointees from each chapter - including Linda Smith of New Paltz, above - presented oral and written reports on members' issues and concerns, which the Negotiations Team and Committee will use to craft a set of proposals for contract talks with the state.

"This meeting is significant because it enables the Team and Committee to hear and understand the full depth and breadth of issues across our chapters," said UUP Chief Negotiator Jamie Dangler of Cortland. The current UUP contract expires July 1, 2011.

Ad Hoc Advisory Committee appointees spent the last few months using surveys, chapter newsletters, focus groups, face-to-face contacts, and chapter meetings to determine what their colleagues want in a successor agreement. Those ideas, anecdotes and concerns were summarized and presented to the Team and Committee for further consideration.

Also making presentations were chairs of the union's Nursing Professions Work Group, and Part-Time Concerns and Technology Sector committees.

Next month, the Negotiations Team and Committee will review all of the data collected through Ad Hoc Advisory and other committee reports, a statewide survey, member suggestion forms, Team visits to every chapter, and an open hearing during the union's fall policymaking convention.
