Outreach Committee gears up for 2011-12

UUP President Phil Smith introduces Gideon Dunkley of Downstate Medical University as the new Outreach Committee chairman during the committee’s retreat Aug. 10 in Syracuse. Nearly 50 members of the committee met to plan the union’s advocacy efforts for the rest of this year and the 2012 legislative session.

Smith left no doubt that the committee faces major challenges.

“The last year has been tough. The next few years will be just as tough, so we need your help,” he said.

Smith and Dunkley emphasized the need to not only get more UUPers involved in advocacy, but also to engage other groups in each member's community in order to build coalitions.

“The threats are out there, so we must get the people in our communities to know the value of providing a quality public higher education for their children,” Smith said.

During the fall, Outreach Committee members will be devoting most of their energy to meeting with state lawmakers in their home districts and participating in get-out-the-vote campaigns.
