Elections, constitutional amendments mark 2011 Fall DA

UUP delegate Georges Fouron of Stony Brook casts his ballot in elections conducted during the union's Fall Delegate Assembly Sept. 23-24 in Albany. The union's 300-plus delegates elected J. Philippe Abraham of UAlbany in a special election to fill the unexpired term of statewide vice president for professionals. Idalia Torres of Fredonia won election as an at-large professional on the Executive Board to fill the vacancy created by Abraham's election as VPP.

The delegates also acted on eight constitutional amendments, including five that pertain to the expanding role of contingent faculty in SUNY and UUP. Among the amendments approved by the union's policymaking body is one that specifies that UUP members are either academic or professional but may also be contingent, and a second that provides UUP membership for contingent members from Sept. 1 to Aug. 31 each year, should they go on and off payroll during the membership year.

Delegates also honored the five SUNY students who received UUP scholarships and three members who received outstanding achievement awards. Details about the students and the members who were honored with awards are included in the October issue of The Voice.
