Downstate advocates in action

UUP Outreach Committee Chair Gideon Dunkley, left, and Dilap Nath, right, both from the Downstate Medical Center Chapter, address UUP’s legislative concerns with Sen. Tony Avella (D-Whitestone) in his district office in Queens.

During the Dec. 5 meeting, the UUP advocates stressed the need for lawmakers to take steps to increase state revenues in order to help support public higher education, just days before the Legislature took such action. They noted that SUNY could not absorb additional budget cuts on top of the elimination of nearly $700 million in state support over the past three years. Sen. Avella echoed his support of the union’s positions.

The meeting represented one in a series of such get-togethers with state lawmakers in their home districts by members of UUP’s Outreach Committee. The sessions provide UUP with the opportunity to advance its legislative agenda before lawmakers return to Albany in January.
