Purchase UUPers celebrate the past, future

Purchase College’s first 45 years were outstanding, thanks in large part to UUP academics and professionals who make SUNY work. The college’s next 45 years will be shaped by young Purchase academics and professionals, such as Meagan Shankey, left, and Sherryan Francis.

That’s why Purchase Chapter leaders decided to celebrate the past and the future at a chapter-sponsored event called Purchase College: The Foundation for the Next 45 Years.”

More than 110 members attended the March 14 evening program, which featured speeches by UUP President Phil Smith and Purchase College Provost Barbara B. Dixon; Chapter President John Delate served as emcee.

“The event was to symbolically recognize that the college’s face is changing before our eyes,” said Delate. “We have this newer generation of academics and professionals and we wanted to bring them together to become more acquainted and recognize that they are the face of the future.” .

Jim Snack, a motivational speaker from Saratoga Springs, was the evening’s keynote speaker; Snack focused on the potential of UUPers in the room to create a future for students and the college.

“Speakers spoke of their long-term experiences at Purchase and telling (younger UUPers) that the more active they become, the greater the satisfaction,” Delate said.

Delate said the next step is to continue the college’s effort with staff and academic development, and to keep UUP members engaged—and hopefully see them take over leadership positions.

“People stayed and hung out afterword and talked,” he said. “It was everything that we hoped for.”
