UUP delegates show support for CFHE

UUP delegates hold signs proudly displaying support for the Campaign for the Future of Higher Education during the union’s Spring Delegate Assembly.

More than 300 delegates attended the meeting of the union’s policymaking and legislative body April 20-21 in Albany. Delegates approved nearly a dozen resolutions and special orders of business, including one supporting CFHE.

Delegates also voted in elections for three statewide officers and five Executive Board seats. Vice President for Professionals Philippe Abraham was elected to his first full term. Treasurer Rowena Blackman-Stroud was re-elected to her 10th term. Cortland Chapter President and Chief Negotiator Jamie Dangler won election to her first term as vice president for academics.

Three Executive Board members – Alfred Chapter President Ray Gleason, Carolyn Kube of Stony Brook HSC and Fredonia Chapter President Idalia Torres – were re-elected. Cobleskill Chapter President Fred Kowal and Bob Rees of Alfred were elected to the board. Both had previously served on the board.

Delegates also honored AFT Director of Higher Education Larry Gold with a standing ovation and a special order of business. Gold is retiring next month after 20 years on the job.

Also at the DA, 11 chapters and the active retirees’ group received a total of 23 awards in the annual UUP Journalism Contest in recognition of their chapter newsletters, websites and photos.
