Focus on FOIL

UUP advocates meet with Assemblyman Gary Finch (R-Springport, third from left) seeking his support of the FOIL bill. The FOIL bill would subject the SUNY Research Foundation and SUNY campus foundations to the state's Freedom of Information Law.

Meeting with Finch during the union's May 8 advocacy day in Albany are, from left, Bob Fluck of Upstate Medical University, Cobleskill Chapter President Fred Kowal, Delhi Chapter President John Taylor, Upstate Chapter President Carol Braund and Atlas Hsie of Utica/Rome.

"The FOIL bill is a top priority for organized labor," Kowal told Finch. "We need to have transparency to get a clear handle on where public funds are going."

About a dozen UUP advocates met with 17 state lawmakers. Most expressed their support of the FOIL legislation.

In addition to pushing for the FOIL bill, the UUP advocates also sought support to keep Downstate's University Hospital in Brooklyn open. They also pressed for other items on UUP's legislative agenda, including measures that would provide unemployment insurance for part-time higher education employees; paid family medical leave and passage of anti-bullying workplace legislation that would encourage employers to take action to end abusive work environments.
