UUP influences NYSUT endorsement

UUP member Dave Ritchie of Cortland asks NYSUT to support Democratic candidate Dan Lamb for Congress. Ritchie spoke during NYSUT's special endorsement conference in Albany May 21 dedicated to choosing Congressional candidates to support.

"We must defeat Richard Hanna," Ritchie said, referring to the freshman Republican Congressman running for re-election. The more than 300 unionists at the conference voted to accept Ritchie's recommendation and endorse Lamb, the Democratic Party candidate who is challenging Hanna.

Nearly a dozen UUPers attend the endorsement meeting conducted earlier than normal as a result of the state's Congressional primaries being scheduled for June 26. NYSUT members backed incumbent Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand for re-election and endorsed candidates in 22 of the state's 27 Congressional district races.

The endorsement recommendations are not finalized until they are approved by NYSUT's Executive Committee and its Board of Directors.

UUP members will participate in NYSUT's Endorsement Conference Aug. 13-14 to select candidates to endorse in November's elections for the state Senate and Assembly.
